Methodology
How programs get into this directory, what counts as a fact, and what the labels mean.
Scope
We include online offerings available to US students from universities, community and technical colleges, career schools, associations, independent providers and continuing-education units. Programs are grouped as comprehensive career training, academic programs, individual or introductory courses and advanced exam preparation; the default comparison shows fully online comprehensive and academic programs, and the groups are not ranked against each other. Hybrid programs are labeled and not presented as fully online. Degrees are included only where medical coding or billing is an explicit, substantive focus.
Sources
Facts come from the provider’s own program pages and from the credentialing bodies’ official pages. Third-party directories, reviews and aggregators are used, at most, to discover names to look up — never as the source of a fact. Every fact carries its source address and, where it is a quoted statement, the quoted text. We do not copy descriptions or databases.
Verification
Quoted facts are checked automatically against the live source page. Of 964 quoted source statements currently recorded, 866 were found on the page, 20 were not found and 78 could not be checked because the page could not be read (for example a bot challenge). We do not bypass access controls; those items stay pending. Price rows whose quote was not found (2 of 172) are hidden from the site until re-checked.
Unknown is not “no”
If a provider does not publish a detail, we show “Not published” or “Not confirmed”. Filters keep these apart: a program that does not state its start dates does not match “open enrollment”. We do not infer exam eligibility from promotional wording: preparation for CPC, CPB, CCA, CCS or CBCS is shown only when the provider explicitly says so, and professional certification itself always comes from the credentialing body.
Prices
Each price has an amount, currency, basis (total, per month, per credit…), conditions, source and date. A monthly installment is never shown as tuition, a promotional price is labeled conditional, and when mandatory costs are unknown we show “known published charges”, never a complete total. Federal aid is recorded only where the specific program states it.
Shared and partner courses
A college may market a course that a training company delivers. We record the institution marketing it, the actual provider and the underlying program separately, and keep each institution’s own price, support and inclusions. The same underlying course appears once as the indexed page; the other channels stay available to compare.
Coverage
Discovery covered all 50 states and Washington, DC as a search method, not as location pages. This is not a complete census: 222 programs are published, and the research register holds 150 candidates pending clarification (mostly pages that block automated reading), 55 under review, 20 excluded, 15 inactive and 13 duplicates. Every record shows when it was last reviewed.
Selections and “best”
We do not publish numerical rankings, scores, reviews, pass rates or placement rates, because we have no verified data for them. Selections group programs by stated criteria computed from published records — see selections.
Sponsorship
Sponsored placements are labeled “Sponsored” and shown in a separate block. Payment does not affect research status, accuracy review, default ordering or any editorial selection. Statuses — research checked, claimed, provider-submitted, sponsored — are tracked separately. Report problems with the correction form.
